obituary

Bheki Margaret Mahlaba was born on the 24th of March in 1935 in Western Native Township (Sophiatown).

She was the second born from her parents Ettani Ida Mahlaba and Nyawu Ephraim Mahlaba. In total, she was one of 16 children from her father.

She attended her schooling at St Cyprian School in Sophiatown. Shortly after that, she left Johannesburg for KwaZulu Natal, her family’s origins eNgoje (Lousberg). While in KZN, she worked as a farm worker for several years before returning to Johannesburg.

Upon her return to Johannesburg, she worked in Wendywood, Gallo Manor and Rosebank. It was in 1978 when Gogo Bheki entered into what was called Margie’s Years, a glorious period that spanned for 21 years as a general worker at Rosebank Primary School. She was a mentor and inspiration to thousands of pupils at the school during this time until she retired in 1998.

In between her work at Rosebank Primary, she had a small business as décor specialist for parties and weddings in Soweto and surrounding areas.

She is survived by her daughter Falandile, four brothers, one sister, 9 grandchildren and 9 great grand-children.

Thulwa’zitha. Mpepeza. Msane. Mahlaba.

We pray that the seed of friendship and love nurtured by uMam’Mahlaba shall blossom forever

    For Margie Mahlaba

    Margie was my second mother.
She loved me unconditionally and I loved her too!
I remember the way she use to bath me and wash and comb my long hair. Always so gentle. Always present in my life. From good times to bad times, Margie was always there. When my beloved parents passed away, Margie was there. As soon as I saw her, it was in her arms I sought comfort! I always felt safe with Margie. I remember as a little girl my parents would argue, and it was beautiful Margie I ran too. She would kiss me and love me like her own!
I remember playing with her beautiful children- Caroline, Bethuel and my best childhood friend, Falandile!
Whenever I returned to SA I wasn’t interested in catching up with most people – but I always wanted Margie.
    Every birthday, every anniversary….she remembered.
I hope and pray that this amazing woman is at peace now and I know that her memory will always be a blessing in my life.
I love you now and forever Margie Mahlaba
