Martha “MAMA” Matlakala Mabalane, born on January 2, 1948, in the vibrant township of Alexandra, brought into this world a ray of sunshine that would illuminate the lives of all who had the privilege of knowing her. On August 29, 2023, our beloved Martha, after a lifetime filled with love and devotion, peacefully passed away, leaving behind cherished memories that will forever reside in our hearts.
MAMA’s journey through life was one that epitomized resilience and determination. After relocating to Diepkloof, she embarked on her educational journey at Seipateng, a school that laid the foundation for her unwavering commitment to learning and personal growth. Her insatiable thirst for knowledge led her to Madibane High School, where she successfully completed her Junior Certificate, a testament to her academic prowess.
Throughout her early years, MAMA worked as a florist, her hands crafting beauty from the simplest of petals, mirroring her ability to bring beauty into the lives of those around her. Simultaneously, she pursued her matriculation, a testament to her unwavering determination to excel in every aspect of her life.
In 1977, MAMA’s journey took her to Kwena Moloto Teachers’ College, where she embarked on a path that would define her life’s work. As she immersed herself in the world of education, she discovered her true calling. In 1979, she began her teaching career at Bapedi Primary School, where she touched the lives of countless young minds with her wisdom, patience, and unwavering dedication. For nearly a decade, she nurtured future generations, leaving an indelible mark on her students.
In 1986, MAMA continued her educational odyssey, moving to Honeydew, where she continued to inspire and guide her students with passion and grace. The name of the school may have faded over time, but the impact of her teachings continues to resonate in the hearts of those she educated.
With a career spanning more than three decades, MAMA finally embraced a well-earned retirement in 2013. However, her commitment to nurturing and empowering others did not wane. She continued to mentor and support aspiring educators, proving that her dedication to education was not confined to a classroom.
MAMA was more than a teacher; she was a beacon of hope, an epitome of love, and a source of unwavering strength for her family, friends, and students. Her laughter was infectious, her kindness boundless, and her wisdom timeless.
As we bid our final farewell to MAMA, we celebrate a life well-lived, one that was dedicated to the service of others. She leaves behind a legacy of love, resilience, and the profound impact of a life dedicated to nurturing the minds and hearts of countless individuals. Her memory will forever be etched in our hearts, a guiding light in the darkness, a reminder of the beauty that she brought into our lives.
She was the final surviving member of the six siblings born to Enoch and Rachel Mamabolo. She was blessed with four children, one of whom preceded her in passing. She leaves behind a cherished legacy, survived by her three children, eight adoring grandchildren, and one beloved great-grandchild.
MAMA’s legacy will live on through the countless lives she touched and the love she shared. May she rest in eternal peace, knowing that her presence in our lives was a gift beyond measure.
